More and more companies are adopting serverless technologies as the community is defining the best practices, tools, and patterns. Companies using Terraform as their infrastructure as a code tool are often required to reinvent the wheel when they work with serverless. In the talk, I will explain why managing serverless applications with Terraform is a good idea and how https://serverless.tf open-source project has started as an organic response to the accidental complexity of many existing tools used by serverless developers.I will demo a complete serverless application (including building and deploying it) using Terraform and open-source components.
Bio: Anton is AWS Community Hero and helps companies around the globe build solutions using AWS and specializes in infrastructure-as-code, DevOps, and reusable infrastructure components. He spends much of his time as an open-source contributor on various Terraform & AWS projects. Such as Terraform AWS modules (downloaded more than 200 million times), Terraform best practices ebook (www.terraform-best-practices.com), doing serverless with Terraform (serverless.tf), Terraform Weekly (weekly.tf), Your Weekly Dose of Terraform (http://bit.ly/terraform-youtube). "Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a network firewall service called Amazon Virtual
Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) that allows you to create a virtual network in the cloud and
control the flow of inbound and outbound traffic to and from your resources. One
feature of Amazon VPC is the ability to filter egress traffic, which refers to the
outbound traffic from your resources to the Internet or other destinations outside of
your virtual network.
Egress traffic filtering can be used to enhance the security of your virtual network by
allowing you to specify which outbound traffic is allowed and which is denied. This can
be useful in scenarios where you want to prevent certain types of traffic from leaving
your network, such as traffic to malicious websites or traffic that violates your
organization's security policies.
To implement egress traffic filtering in Amazon VPC, you can create a security group
and specify the rules for allowed and denied traffic. You can then associate the
security group with your resources, such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
instances or Amazon RDS databases. Any traffic that matches the rules in the security
group will be allowed or denied based on the specified action.
Overall, egress traffic filtering is a useful tool for enhancing the security of your
virtual network in AWS and controlling the flow of outbound traffic from your
resources."

Have you ever thought that your Lambda functions could fail without you even noticing? If the answer is YES, that’s probably because you already “got burned" by playing with the cloud, where errors and failures are always around the corner. Unfortunately, we can’t prevent all types of failures, but what we can do is try to spot them as soon as possible and react quickly. In order to do that, we need good observability for our serverless applications and therefore we need to become familiar with services like CloudWatch. If you have tried CloudWatch already, you probably know how powerful but also complex it can be. In this talk, I will approach the topic of observability for serverless applications on AWS. I will also present our open-source toolkit for observability 'SLIC Watch' which automates away most of the pain of setting up dashboards and alarms in CloudWatch, making it easier to achieve great levels of observability.

We started working on a greenfield web application project and picked AWS CDK for the Infrastructure as Code tooling. The project lifted off rapidly thanks to the Level 3 Constructs of AWS CDK. Then it turned into a nightmare because of the security and compliance requirements. We started from scratch and wrote all the infrastructure code again. Eventually, everything went great, and we turned the stacks into a blueprint for future projects. In this talk, I will share our story with the lessons learned.

"Building a serverless function or an API is easy. However, things get a bit more
complicated as your application grows. What works for a few functions often doesn't
work for hundreds of functions and services. As your application grows, you'll need to
evolve your architecture, deployment, monitoring, and tooling.
This talk is a case study of the serverless startup's architecture evolution. We
started with a single Lambda function in early 2018 and evolved our application through
multiple stages and architectures. Currently, the application uses CQRS with GraphQL
and 200 Lambda functions serving millions of requests. We faced and solved many issues
during the last four years, learned many things, and managed to keep our infrastructure
costs low."
